Here we go...

"what time is it?" I asked as I faced the truth that the raining noise was actually rain outside

"8-20".

"ah, we need to be there at 9-15!!"

What followed was not quite a scene from four weddings and a funeral but I was thankful that I had packed the night before.

THE SEND OFF

We met outside Williams financial at 9-15 and were greeted by some close friends and family to wave us of on our trip which was greatly appreciated by all of us. I actually think it was only today that the task really dawned on a lot of people especially me.  The key for most of the trip down here has been reminding myself I only really need to go 15 miles at a time to meet up with the Van/Break for food/drink and that is no problem.

the send off.  DJ mugging the photo in the backgrounn

The van was packed with out equipment, spare bikes and enough lucozade to power a junior school class for about two years and we posed for some photos before saying our farewell.

DAY1

Now day one in itself is just the drive down to Lands end so not much to report.

The weather looked vile, the hills daunting and there was an unusual traffic jam involving an open top bus on a single track road.

Really??  down a one track road?

LANDS END

After finding our hotel and depositing our stuff in the rooms, we headed off to lands end. Which was shut.

Well not really... but given it was six thirty on the longest day of the year this was surprising. It was also freezing. Posing for the photos in the t-shirts was the second case of manning up after the initial leaving in the rain photos.

To avoid doubt we are going right.

We took a little walk around the site which was a great refresher after the time in the van. We found the first and last pub in England (shut), We then found the first and last post box (out of use) an the lands end hotel restaurant (only open to residents).

What did they do?

No reflection on Mike and Lee in the distance

At this point , bearings gained, we headed back to the pub near the sea view b&b for some dinner and to plot tomorrow.

the man or muppet tour couldnt have started in a better pub

Its worth pointing out that for a long time, we had "man or Muppet?" t-shirts printed for the whole team which for a variety of reasons we seem to have all forgotten to bring with us.  It was then quite a nice surprise when we went to the Cable Station Inn to see the sign hanging on the wall of Muppet Corner.  I am taking that as a good omen. :-)

TOMORROW

Breakfast is booked for seven thirty so by about eight thirty we should be actually on the bikes and have started for real.  Wish us luck.

Day 1 quotes

" it's depressing watching Lance Armstrong it makes me feel like an amateur."

"drafting the caravan? I could have made a cup of tea!"

"I will have lots of gear changes on the hills tomorrow. I may strain my left arm" mike the driver!!
